10 Tips to Make 2012 a Fantastic Year for Your Cat

If you’ve already made your New Year’s resolutions, it’s time to turn to the well being of your cat. It’s a new year and the perfect opportunity to establish new routines that will make 2012 your cat’s healthiest and happiest year yet. Here are some ideas to get you started.

  1. Prepare for the Unexpected. Add the numbers of a 24/7 animal poison control center and your nearest 24/7 vet hospital to your cell phone and place the numbers near your home phone. Create a pet first aid kit and place a pet rescue window alert on an outside window of your home to notify firefighters there are pets inside.

  2. Enrich Your Cat's Life. Treat your cat to something new, whether it's a cat condo with a fabulous view of the outdoors, or a new activity. Leash walking or clicker training, anyone? Invest in a new assortment of toys to encourage play and let your kitty's inner hunter come out.

  3. Visit the Vet. Schedule a vet visit to make sure your cat is in good health. It's a fact that kitties are not brought in often enough (nor nearly as much as dogs) for preventative care vet visits, and these visits are essential for your cat’s good health.

  4. Feed Your Cat Well. Take time to research your cat's food and the other options that are available to make sure he’s getting the very best. Visit catinfo.org or cats.about.com/cat-food for pointers on choosing food.

  5. Groom On. Commit to maintaining a good grooming schedule. Regular brushing, nail clipping and weekly teeth brushing all keep your cat healthy, comfortable and looking good.

  6. Help a Shelter. Not all pets are as lucky as yours, so help pets in need by donating money, goods, or your time (your dog will be happy to share you for a good cause). There are many ways to volunteer – from taking photos of shelter pets, to fostering, and posting profiles of available pets online. Begin with a minimal time commitment if it makes it easier to get started.

  7. Start a Pet Savings Account. Regularly put aside money in a dedicated savings account or simply in tuck it an envelope, and use it for vet care, toys or even a new bed when your cat’s abode needs a boost.

  8. Research Resources. This is your year to lock in good pet-sitting resources long before you schedule a trip. Take the time now to read reviews, visit facilities and meet pet sitters to find just the right fit for cat care while you’re away.

  9. Spend Quality Time with Your Cat. Give your kitty your undivided attention each and every day. Play with your cat or cuddle on the couch and give your cat an extended under the chin rub. And get to know and understand your cat’s likes and dislikes to improve and strengthen your bond.

  10. Read the Meow Report. Keep reading Meow Report to learn how to best care for your cat, and sign up for Meow Report Monthly Email newsletters so you don't miss a tip! Please share Meow Report with others with cats too.

Happy New Year!
